Post 33 Assateague Island MD, Home to MA

  Assateague Island, MD, On our way home to MA.  May 18-23 We've always wanted to camp on the shore at Assateauge and this was our chance.  We spent five beautiful days on the Atlantic shore.  Our campsite was just steps from the beach where we spent our evenings looking for shells and interesting marine life. Assateauge is home to 80-90 wild horses.  They live in bands of about 6-10 each all along the length of the Island.  We had a band of eight that basically lived in our campground. They were certainly opportunists, waiting for people to leave any food unguarded on their picnic table.   They wait in the parking lot for people to open their trunk and then run over to investigate.  The main job of the camp hosts is to keep track of where the horses are.  They're fun to watch but the ones hanging the campgrounds are not afraid of people and are a bit of a nuisance.   We spent our days walking the beach, hiking the trails and w...

Post 32 New River Gorge NP, Shenandoah NP, Gettysburg

  New River Gorge NP, Shenandoah NP, Gettysburg May 10-17 New River Gorge NP is in eastern West Virginia.  The park is comprised of land along a beautiful white water river gorge.  Our first stop was the Sandstone Visitor Center where we learned about the watershed and history of the New River.  Exhibits emphasized the local flora and fauna and the impact human activities have on the river. There were many small and large recycling practices demonstrated and ways to recycle at home. In fact, this Visitor Center was the old local high school, just rehabbed for use by the National Park System. The landscaping demonstrates different ecosystems present in this part of West Virginia. Just wonderful! We drove south along the river and stopped at an overlook that featured the New River Falls.
